About WDC Distillery

With a nod to the past and both feet firmly planted in the future, Washington DC is home to a thriving spirits scene. Get in the spirit at these local vodka, gin and rum distilleries offering tastings, tours and other experiences.

In 1797, George Washington’s farm manager, James Anderson, convinced the President to build a distillery on his Mount Vernon plantation. It would be the largest distillery in America at the time. Washington was always looking to simplify his extensive farming operations and turn over land for other profitable enterprises.

The distillery building was constructed in October of 1797. Archaeological excavations uncovered the foundation for five stills, a boiler, sandstone blocks for walls and a doorway, and evidence for a wall that separated the distillery’s office from its storage room.

Today, visitors can see the reconstruction of this historic distillery. The site is open for tours April – October and entrance to the distillery and gristmill is included with admission to Mount Vernon. Proceeds from the sale of spirits and gift sets support the ongoing preservation and restoration of this historic estate.
